Right, so you made it to Stronghold Level 4 and all of your other buildings are at level 3. You are probably still researching troop training in the background, which will finish shortly. Now it’s time to build an army!
You should start by building another three barracks and upgrade each of them to level 3. This will allow you to train 400 troops at a time.
You should now click on one on of your barracks, select Swordsman and immediately train 400 troops (it should take around an hour and a half). Keep an eye on your troop training meter and as soon as it’s complete you can train another 400 troops.
I would recommend training roughly equal numbers of Swordsman, Slingers, Cavalry and Battering rams. Rotating through each one in turn is a great way to build up a balanced army.
You should try and keep a constant flow of troops training as long as resources permit.
Whilst your first batch of troops is training you are ready to get back to upgrading your buildings. You should upgrade all of your farms and buildings to level 4. With VIP 2 and some help from your alliance this should be fairly quick and instant in most cases.
You may have noticed you have eight empty farm tiles sitting there which could be earning you resources. Now it’s up to you how you set up your farm tiles, there are many schools of thought here and I am not going to get into the pros and cons of them all, as this is only a beginners guide.
My favoured starting approach is to have four logging camps, four quarries, four mines and the rest food farms. This will provide you with a good balanced starting income and gives you enough food to support a large army.
As you progress to the end levels you will want to review your setup (I usually switch to an all food setup in the later game). Whatever you decide to do, now is a good time to fill those extra tiles and bring them all up to level 4.
You should review your farms throughout the game and be prepared to change your set up if needs be.
First off you need to know that wall traps are next to useless. I would only recommend building enough to complete build quests before leaving them be. I tell a small lie, the one thing wall traps are good for is completing the world trap events, however for now just click on your wall and build 100 wall traps and complete the quest before moving on.
Just before you upgrade your Stronghold it is a good idea to check your Academy to see if troop training is complete. If you see the parchment and quill symbol hovering above your Academy it means you are not currently researching. Ideally you should always be researching something (resources permitted). Now is a good time to unlock your Economics tree by researching Construction which should take just under 3 hours to complete.
At last you are ready for Stronghold 5. It should take around 1 hour 15 minutes to complete and you may wish to use some speed ups if you have any left.
You will face some very important decisions before progressing to stronghold 6. Find out all the details in my next guide Stronghold Level 6 – and beyond.
