About this time last year I started compiling data and writing one of the first ever guides on Appsorium:- How to Unlock Tier 4 Troops.
Since March 14 a lot has changed in Game of War and whilst the basic principles to unlock Tier 4 are still the same, it's no longer reserved only for high spenders.
I’ve had numerous requests to write an updated guide and to be honest it has been on my to-do-list for a long time now, but alliance cities, new research and loads of other new content always seemed to take priority.
I think the final straw that bumped this article up the list, was after a frustrated reader of my site left the following comment on the original article:- “Ultimately this article is nothing but anti GOW propaganda. If I were MZ I would sue this website.” (referring to the fact that it no longer costs $2-$3,000 to unlock T4!)
So... without further ado I give you my updated "How to Unlock Tier 4 Troops" as of 16 February 2015.
I’m not going to go through all the requirements from scratch to get there, so to start off I’m going to assume you have unlocked all of the Tier 3 Troops and that you have got your Stronghold to 20, plus all other buildings to 20 except the Hall of War, Prison and Altar.
The above should be doable at minimal cost for most serious players and in a relatively short period of time.
To summarise you should have the following buildings at 20:-
Stronghold, Academy, Barracks, Embassy, Farm, Forge, Gymnos, Hospital, Logging Camp, Market Place, Mine, Quarry, Store House, Villa, Walls and Watch Tower.
And the following combat research to get T3 unlocked:-
Scouting 1, Cavalry Attack 1, Infantry Attack 1, Ranged Attack 1, Cavalry Defense 2, Infantry Defense 2, Ranged Defense 2, plus all T3 troops unlocked.
To research T4 you need a level 21 Academy and the requirement for a level 21 Academy is all of the above buildings at level 21!
The hard part is you also need to level your Hall of War, Prison and Altar to level 21. This requires books of war, shackles and daggers, 20,000 of each to be exact. These can be purchased in the gold store, or received in chests. The cost to purchase all of these is 600,000 gold.
The material cost of the above upgrades is 183 million wood, 155 million food, 117 million ore, and 242 million stone. The time taken is just over 1,000 days, or 333 days with a 200% construction boost, or 250 days with a 300% construction boost.
Finally you will need 18 Masters’ Hammers to upgrade each of the buildings to level 21. Actually you only need 17, because you are rewarded with one free hammer when you upgrade to Stronghold 21.
The cheapest way is to buy three packs of 5 for 9,500 gold a pack and two individual hammers for 2,000 gold each, costing a total of 32,500 gold.
Next is the research. The amount of research varies depending on whether you are measuring your time to unlock a single T4 troop, or all troop types. For this guide I will show the cost to unlock the T4 infantry: Immortals.
One of the first requirements is to max the whole of the Economics Tree except for gold gathering. The economics abilities are needed in order to unlock some of the later combat abilities (needed for T4 troops).
This will cost 53 million wood, 52 million food, 44 million ore, 52 million stone and 149 million silver. The time cost is around 700 days, or 233 days with a 200% research boost, or 175 days with a 300% research boost.
The final requirements are in Combat Tree and in order to unlock Immortals you will need the following:- Scouting 10, Infantry Attack 10, Infantry Defense 10, Troop Health 10, Troop Defense 10, Siege Defense 10, Siege Attack 10 and finally Immortals.
The cost to unlock the above is 92 million wood, 92 million food, 69 million ore, 72 million stone and 303 million silver. The time cost is just over 3,800 days, or 1,266 days with a 200% research boost, or 950 days with a 300% research boost.
In summary the total cost of all the building upgrades and research is as follows:-
Whilst the material cost may seem daunting, with the exception of silver you should be able to get there via a combination of farming accounts, resource gathering and trading with your alliance. The silver requirement is a little more tricky and may require the purchase of some packs or a lot of help from alliance members.
The time cost is difficult, but not impossible to get without hitting the gold store. With careful planning using events (check out our event guide) you should be able to unlock a lot the research above whilst recovering speed ups through events.
Masters’ Hammers – there is no way round this other than to purchase these with gold. However, 30,000 gold can be easily obtained in a month using the Treasury and Gold Mine. Check out our free gold guide.
Shackles, Daggers and War Books are the final hurdle for most players trying to unlock T4. How many you will need to buy will largely depend on your alliance. If you are in a top alliance on your server, with a lot of high spenders, then it is not at all unfeasible to obtain a large chunk of these through alliance gifts.
To give you an example, my alliance receives about 200-250 gifts a day and I will usually get a random combination of about 200-400 daggers/shackles/war books at alliance gift level 18. It would still take me 150 to 300 days to get enough without gold.
However, you can also earn 30,000 gold a month with your gold mine and treasury, add to this your alliance gifts and you can buy any shortfall relatively quickly.
Not in a top Alliance? Then all of the above still holds true, it just means it will take you considerably longer unless you a buy some gold packs to help you out.
A year ago T4 was simply not an option for those unwilling to dig deep into their pockets. Whilst T4 is still a significant challenge, it is no longer open only to big spenders. Given enough time and utilizing alliance gifts, events, the treasury and gold mine, the average player now has a chance to raise an army of Immortals or War Elephants.
