In Boom Beach the Landing Craft is used to transport your troops from your base to attack another player, or computer controlled base.
Upgrading your Land Craft grants you one additional space per level, starting at 5 spaces for level 1 and maxing out at 24 for level 20. Each troop type takes up a different number of spaces with the Rifleman taking the smallest space of one per unit. This means that a single level 20 Landing Craft can hold 24 Riflemen.
You start the game with just two, but as you upgrade your Headquarters you unlock additional Land Crafts. At max HQ you can have a total of 8.
Each Landing Craft can only hold one troop type, but you can have multiple troops across different crafts. When attacking another island you can choose where to deploy each individual craft. This is useful because it allows you to deploy units such a Tanks and Heavies first, to soak up the damage.
You should prioritise upgrading your Landing Craft early on, because the more you have (and the higher their level), the more troops you can transport in an attack and therefore the higher change you have of winning.
The table below breaks down the build cost for each level, the troop capacity and the time taken to upgrade.
